Fettercairn 26yo 1995 / 2022 for The Highlander Inn #2826 60.2%
Quite a quiet kick this one. Plenty of barley sugar, butter and malt character, and something like burnt mint leaf, but otherwise its somewhat reticent on the nose, perhaps due to the abv. On the tongue however the full weight of this whisky is revealed. It’s akin to a Ben Nevis lite with strong bones of that peculiar meatiness that’s not quite sulphur. With these malts there is a dimension to the mouthfeel that can only be described as textural. Struck match, hot grills and a touch of char. Pine scented spray cleaner, clear herbaceous tictures and what must be melting rocks. Austere even with water and high octane throughout. 86 pts
