Caol Ila 15 yo 1988 Shieldaig Collection 43%
It is that precise sort of Caol Ila I enjoy most, a style which holds up a mirror to 70s Ardbeg. So, clean and crisp salt air, a lone cigarette, hot beach sand. Wintergreen, eucalyptus rub and preserved lemons. The peat is not overdone but by no means quiet. A dry, earthy, rooty peat with overtones of dried medicinal herbs, seaweed and salty rocky earth taken from that no man’s land between the beach and where plants grows properly. Eyes closed this could very well be a bottle strength old Ardbeg. 88 pts
