Longmorn 39 yo 1969 / 2009 Gordon & Macphail Book of Kells Mash Tun Kask JIS #5298 58.9%
The product of marrying an excellent dry sherry with a top class distillate. The sherry is prominent first, dry and cracked with black pepper, touch umami with soy and plenty of dark woods. On it sits bowls of glistening preserved fruit, thickly sticky and glazed, carrying undertones of cinnamon and licorice. In-between these edges however things start to melt into each other with perfect integration, that much would have made a great whisky already but more comes along – ammonium chloride , wintergreen, shoe polish and bitter alpine cough syrup. A pervasive fruitiness gnaws it the edges of the senses but never quite makes it into the limelight, which is a pity but even so, a man in a boat rises with the tides without getting wet. 91 pts
