Glen Grant 31 yo 1972 Kingsbury #697 56.5%
Expectations met and exceeded – deep purple fruit, boiling jam, cocoa, black tea, clove and cinnamon over date and walnut slices, baklava on worn teak trays and even a wisp of resinous incense, but to its credit none of that over-oakiness that plagues this genre. On the tongue, firm with a tight grip and this is where some of the earthier aspects like charred wood and clean ginseng stand out. Little hints of clean medicinal herbs at the finish. Overall this one sits well away from the heaviest, darkest end of the spectrum, and manages to cling on to the fruitier and spicier aspects of the sherry without the tannins. Exceptional old whisky. 92 pts
