Massive is an understatement, both in terms of power but also flavour. Here all blackwood and dripping teak oil on geological layers of wood soot and a burnt assemblage of patchouli, sage and other medicinal herbs. Its not all phenolics, emergent dry purples and sticky blacks speak of molasses glazed dry prunes and raisins and indeed on the tongue its the sweeter promises made by this duo that outpaces the phenolics. Burnt wicks, soy and licorice about but an underlying suppleness and fruit in the spirit give the whole lift and despite its leaden weight, the whisky is hardly weighed down. 88 pts
