Port Ellen 24 yo 1975 Adelphi #1766 57.1%
I’ve had a bit of time out exploring wines but I conclude nothing beats whisky. Back to Port Ellen, where in 1975 the new drum maltings became fully operational, I wonder if the transition was not without some kinks. This is frankly not an impressive Port Ellen if its only measure was power and depth. It is much less phenolic, with a sort of smoked honey, graphite oil, and just whispers of tar and oil. There’s diesel spill on sea water, rock pools, some suede, and smoke from burning reeds and grassy stems. Dirty salt water and driftwood. It’s maritime heart is where it should be and nothing so far makes it a bad whisky, just atypical. 88 pts
