Springbank 18yo 1986 Fauchon Centenaire 1886 – 1986 46%
Oh my, an exciting one. This is the ripe and earthy side of Springbank that’s been somewhat less of a thing after the 90s? First hot flints, salty air and grassy smoke, but then ripe earth full of vegetal elements, like raked in cowpats and years of mulch. You can almost sense the blackly glistening clods of oozing mud. Torn roots, wet rubber boots and lit coals. Touches of coffee and boiled orange rind, and a fair amount of glass, before a turn to sappy stems and beach sand. Perhaps the serendipitous discovery of something I didn’t expect to find in an 80s Springbank. Musky oils, heavy, resinous and a weighty sea-lashed presence. Springbank! 90 pts
