Bowmore 14yo 1971 Sestante 57.7%
Opened cans of dark wood oil stain, shellac, old cedar boxes and teak furniture. Dry dry dry. Not quite cold firepits and fresh ash in the air are an even match for the dessicated purples and blacks of fruit so dry it’ll last forever. Black tea, tar, licorice, charred wood and worn carpets, and again stale cigarette smoke. Yet there’s also something sharply mineral and solar in it, and from somewhere a lick of salt. On the tongue it is the peaty phenols, woodfire and smoke that rush forth. But also dried mandarin, cough medicine and powdered herbs. It remained dry to the end, and miraculously avoided getting too tannic. Not fruity in essence I think. 90 pts
