Springbank 15 yo black label 46%
One of the cleaner Springbanks. This time some obvious waxy notes, clean sackcloth, a tiny bit of fermenting fruit, fried banana chips, honey, maybe a bit of soot, and finally a lick of salt. Not a bold nose at all. Rather easygoing but entirely nice. On the tongue, the fermenty notes, the soot and salt take a step forward, plus some singer oil. Great drinking Springbank. 86 pts
Springbank 25 yo 46% parchment label, gold trim
Rich nose. This one took time and air to open up fully, but open up it did with a wonderful fruitiness complemented by a soft sherry. Those were golden years at Springbank. Truth be told its a particular sort of stewed and camphorated fruitiness with hints of boozy ferment. I recall the 30 yo in this range was excellent with bursting tropical fruit instead. Not inclined to point at the sherry which here is a velvety soft glove, spiced and plush with dark richness on a bed of heavy resins and balsam. Little notes of earth, salt and engine oil float about. The whole is quite wonderful. 90 pts
