Highland Park 13 yo 2006 for Simplywhisky Singapore #1646 64.7%
Great news, it’s a moderately sherried Highland Park, with just about enough of everything to be an all round pleaser, well done Simplywhisky crew! The sherry cask brings fruit of the forest, a berry and dark chocolate ganache, bitter walnuts and brown sugar. The wood tends to be extractive, and darker tones of teak and aniseed appear already. Highland Park has the bones to wear this well so find a mineral and oily texture on the tongue, like kaolin suspended in a viscous vegetable oil, and the spirit takes off with lit coals on a bed of black earth, white smoke, graphite, broken saplings and gallons of Vicks chest rub. All that in 13 years! 87 pts
Highland Park 30 yo 1989 / 2019 Gordon & Macphail 19/003 51.1%
It’s a dark and dry nose, which suggests too much time in highly extractive wood. Gleaming blackwood and teak oil, in a charred sort of way, the most bitter walnuts, and Fernet. One cannot help but think of unwashed carpets, bits of compost, cherries, and burnt brush from a distance. Heavy resins like labdanum and pinesap permeate the nose. A dose of amaro on the tongue, unsweetened cola, juniper and old camphor. The cask was a bit of a beast I think. Very little sweetness or fruit here, and totally dry and almost medicinal. Undoubtedly complex but not quite convincing. 87 pts
