Clynelish 24 yo 1988 / 2013 Hepburn’s Resolution 48.8%
An interesting Japan only bottle. Well Japan dreams of Clynelish it seems, with molten wax and hot cream slathered over bare granite and pine needles. A good dream then. Lit bunsen burners and a wheelbarrow of sand, chalk and lime peels sprinkled by drops of turpentine. That’s it, more or less, simple and to the point but the message cannot be more welcomed. My sort of 80s Clynelish. 89 pts
Clynelish 12 yo 1989 / 2001 Gordon & Macphail #3248 57.9%
So. Much darker here, with plenty of dry oak escorted by the peppery aromatic bite of milled woodspice. Not overtly rich but one notices the signs like cocoa powder, crumbling leather, burnt sugar, licorice and herbal bitters. It suggests the aroma but not the sweetness of cooked pineapple. Unfortunately, on the palate the tannins become a little raucous. It’s all a little too much for the waxiness, which is regrettably absent here. 87 pts
