Strathisla 1965 / 2011 #3473 vs Tamdhu 21 yo 1990 Old & Rare Douglas Laing

Big sherry night:

Strathisla 45 yo 1965 / 2011 Gordon & Macphail for LMDW #3473 48%

This one was bottled by LMDW Singapore, half the cask is with a private individual.

Full on sherry maturation throttle down. Lots of dry aromatic richness coming from the (superb) cask. A purple-scale rainbow covering the range from plum skins to dried figs to thick goopy blackberry jam. Some charred wood is also coming through, plus muted black pepper, and satchets of pungent herbs used for traditional medicine. Find also hints of rancio, wet wrinkled leather, and a gamut of spices: star anise, cloves, sweet cinnamon and clean camphor. It is also well that the spirit is firm enough to carry the sherry while retaining its suppleness and malty-oily core that thankfully doesn’t get in the way of the richness.

Tamdhu 21 yo 1990 Old & Rare Douglas Laing 53.6%

Here’s the thing, you can tell it was a good sherry butt, and the oak is very much under control despite the sherry influence, but the sherry is somewhat restrained, and less sophisticated. Comes across as sweeter, fresher, jammier, with stewed dark berries and milk chocolate, but also simpler and it clearly lacks the Strathisla’s intensity and depth. It does have a bit of a spent match sulphur buzz to it which gives it great mouthfeel. However in all respects it is simply exceeded by the Strathisla in its old sherry butt. Not surprised at all but perfectly demonstrates how one of the ‘better’ modern sherry casks fares against what is considered just a ‘decent’ old sherry butt.
