Pierde Almas Tobaziche Mezcal 48%
A luminous and crystalline mezcal short on smoke and the dirty facets one finds in other makes. Instead it bring a full agave flavour, clean dry earth, salt crusted rocks and wet clay. Rather light-bodied for a Mezcal as well, brine and capers, hints of thyme and sage, and just a slice of preserved lemon rind. Close your eyes and you could be drinking from earthenware cups. If, like me, you prefer a heavy smoky dirty Mezcal then this isn’t for you, but I can see it working well as a introduction to the genre, or in a cocktail.
Pescador De Suenos Tobala PSTB-2A 2016 San Juan Del Rio 50.13% NOM-0258X
Feels like we’ve gone into olfactory 3D, now with enhanced depth and strapping personality. A sweet and smokey vegetable stew, firewood, elements of ‘over ripe’ fruit, and distinctly pungent though not the dirty sort either. Wet earth and fresh mulch, salted licorice, ammonium chloride (which can be a tad addictive). Great Mezcal, bold profile but perfectly balanced.
