Honestly a lovely sherry maturation, replete with cherry compote, fig jam, molasses and soy. Brittle old wood, cinnamon and cloves, black pepper and liquorice are the woodier notes. Fresh grated cocoa powder, and sakura candies. A drily aromatic but dark and fabulously rich nose, without being overly oaky. Phenomenal choice of cask. Not as firm or tightly woven as some other Speysiders, instead this Glen Grant wears the sherry with an easy or perhaps lascivious grace.

So almost double the age, and what does that bring us? The bottom opened out into a dark intensity of overripe purples and fermenty blacks, yes a touch of rancio, together with earthy funk, perpetually wet leather and leaky wine casks. Charred wood, blackest of tea and seared bits. Hints of patchouli and sandalwood. Mandarin peel left to mulch. A sliver of woody herbals -almost rosemary, maybe sage – hover somewhere over the gravity of these thick and rich but heavily tannic notes. Though we remain very much in the dry aromatic but dark camp throughout.
