Benrinnes 20 yo 1974 / 1994 Signatory #2577 43%
I expected something of a beast but this old Benrinnes is a gentle old soul, granted there are dashes of beef bouillion and some salty lovage parsley dressing but is that from the spirit or the lovely old sherry butt it was matured in? Also wonderful on the nose with soft and sweet spices, figs, cocoa and old Port. Here and there touches of tar, cold charred bits and oily stoves appear. Most interestingly, on the tongue it absolutely blooms into a host of savoury herbs with oily metallic glints.

Merest hint of fruit gum notes, then old school with fry oil, gunked up suntan lotion, desiccated old books, worn out cedar boxes and dried orange skins. Fairly thick and viscous and very firmly knitted together. A while later the savouriness comes forth with gamey hints, salty culinary herbs and an umami-esque seasoning quality, but its no meat monster. This one needs time and lots of prying apart. Not easy peasy at all. A bit of cardboard towards the finish as well.
