Rosebank 34 yo 1994 (distilled ~1960) James MacArthur 55%

Yes it’s an older style of Rosebank markedly different from the zesty and fresh of later years. This one reminds me of the Zenith 20 yo, though nowhere as ‘phenolic’ – but it remains chock full of grime, lamp oil, sooty things, brittle old waxes and blackened resins. Coal dust and hot machines. Somewhat brusque and aloof even, quite the opposite of say the sweet warm hug of loving peat. Traces of vegetal decay. Dried out lemon rinds, drops of some sort of traditional herb medicine where camphor and sage play a big role. Especially earthy and sooty on the tongue. Clearly phenolic in style yet it retains a delicacy and elegance that is quite opposite the power of the 20 yo Zenith. 90 pts

Rosebank 30 yo 1975 / 2005 Silver Seal 55.8%

This one is already headed towards more familiar territories with zests and thick citrus oil. Rather vocal too! Hot fresh sap, crushed greenery (angelica? dill?), clay bricks, but also loads of an aromatic sort of medicinal bark? Polished metal tools, solid fuel and a touch of grime remain as well. The wood eases all that in with a noticeable creamy custard and vanilla that is not too much. Finally and surprisingly sour on the tongue with an acerbic citrus bite plus hot flints, green oxalic acid and hot lubricants. In between worlds. 88 pts.
