Clynelish 21 yo 1995 Signatory #8672 55.5%
Immediate. Rubbed wax, grated grapefruit peel, limestone, wet clay, dewy branches. liquid paraffin. A tiny bit of wet ropes, and just a touch of fermenting fruit. A lean style of Clynelish that tends to austerity despite the (admittedly inactive) sherry butt, but not a flint blade that some 95s are (and which I love). On the palate it is quite vigorous with chilli seed, mustard, grass juice and lots of thick wax. Character like none other. 87 pts

This one rearranges things. Minerals forward – tight, stony sharp and cauterised clean, then cans of the purest waxiest wax, the flesh of white stone fruit, and aromatic leaves crushed in the hand, Clean but weighty on the palate with thickened cream (the oak I think) and hints of curdled sweetness do poke through. Molten wax, lots of calcium carbonate and kaolin, now wasabi and grapefruit rind puree. Remarkably lean and sharp – so similar yet such marked variation. To paraphrase a friend with added flourish – Not an easy style to explain, yet a whisky a connoisseur loves easily. 89 pts
