Ledaig 17 yo 1997 Carn Mor #643080 49.7%
These late 90s Ledaigs could be very good, and this one proves the point. It is uncomplicated but effective: Big peat, big brine, copious amounts of dirty mud, black smoke, burning coal, hot engine fumes, chest rubs, ground sea shells, and sea weed covered nets all at a go. You fee it straight up the nose. Big, fat, oily, smoky and viscously peaty whisky, with hints of Jamaican style mouldering fruit funk on the tongue, but absolutely no feints. Well done! Seems to me that 2000s Ledaig seem to be cleaner and sharper while these had more juicy fat to them. 87 pts
Ledaig 18 yo 1997 Carn Mor #643023 55.6%
Almost the same whisky, except the abv closes down the nose a notch while the palate remains an avalanche. It is again a big boned and muscled style of Ledaig, gritty with thrown earth, hot engines and black smoke. Very similar in fact. Simple power for easy drinking. In fact this one does seem a notch cleaner and simpler than 643080, and that’s neither a plus or minus for this great Ledaig, but that did make the first more enjoyable. 86 pts
