Ardmore 12 yo 1986 / 1999 100th Anniversary 40%
The peat used for Ardmore’s malt, being of a different composition than Islay peat, gives this Ardmore a muddy earth and rooty undertow, with plenty of earthiness like grimy mulch, dried leaves, tobacco, dried twigs, white woodsmoke, but definitely no salt and no seaside here. Nice nose! On the tongue an undecided dilution of honey candy, or is that malt sugar, metalic tinned fruit, hot grills, pvc leather. Somewhat anemic despite the peat. And towards the finish, a whisper of lavender, not enough to be accused of a faux pas though. 82 pts
Ardmore 20 yo Signatory bottled for the 50th Anniversary of the Forty-Nine Wine & Spirit Club in 2009 54%
Carrying on the anniversary theme. Somewhat closed and tense on the nose – Saturated with peat oil, hot tar, molten resin, and something flammable like bone dry firewood. On the tongue its a concentrate of linseed oil, BBQ smoke, black mud, seared meat, glowing embers and white ash. Not a lush or ‘broad’ whisky but one of those narrow intense ones that seems to bring its own gravity. 86 pts
