Benrinnes 28 yo 1984 / 2013 Old & Rare Hunter Laing 49.8%
It serves well to be reminded that Benrinnes had an atypical double-plus distillation regime till 2007, and one feels it here. Wet Chalk, yeasty like white dough rising, sour beer, and chives. Very unique. Bitter woody pith from garden trimmngs, and quite a dollop of malt and sweet cream. A very clear prickly, almost-sulphury grizzled meat like burnt edge outlines this whisky. Yellow fruit and honey, hot pans and soot on the tongue and a savoury meaty finish. 84 pts.
Benrinnes 16 yo 1980 / 1996 Blackadder #1350 61.2%
A different experience. This one is quite narrow but very powerful. Lots of sweet wood and clear oils, custard and caramelised sugar in burnt pans, some hot flints on the tongue. Syrupy thick and gingery hot. Not much else, but very thick, oily and powerful. 81 pts.
