Domaine Dupont Millésime 1977 Calvados 42%
Whiskyrific enjoys Rums and Mezcals on the side – What’s life without a pinch of variety? Calvados however is entirely new to me, and it may be that one needs to ‘learn’ a nose so I beg forbearance. Frankly the apple here is lovely, and smells of deeply roasted apple dessert and oxidised cider. Oily nut shells and newly lit charcoal. Surprisingly talkative. Turpenes, camphor, ancient spice cabinets and old, old wood thats absorbed the decades and just reeks of history- you know the sort when you walk into one of those old timber houses, a heady and nebulous mix of oils, lacquer, sweet spices, resin and spilt wine. There’s also a medicinal root side to it. Lively and vibrant on the palate despite the age and the strength. Oak shows though, and rather short on development and staying power. An enthralling new experience. 88 pts would be an equivalent whisky score, but please view this with a large side of suspicion.
