Dalwhinnie 15 43% ~ 2009 bottling
Textbook pleasing. Butter on overly burnt toast. Runny honey, fresh cut fruit, bittergourd, museli, the merest hint of snubbed matches that become oddly pronounced on the tongue. One of the first malts that got me hooked eons back. 83 pts
Dalwhinnie 27 yo 1966 / 1993 Cadenhead 45.5%
Stepping into another dimension now. Here are phenolic notes aplenty. Thickly coagulated grease on rusty screws. Soot coated garages. Exhaust fumes of old boneshakers seeking that second breath of life. Moving and deeply poignant. I have a passion for this style of old highlands. Dried black earth on oily machinery and old camphor sticks. Clearly phenolic to an extent unimaginable today. Spilt oils, black and viscid, ancient resins, crumbling brown paper, burnt roots and stems, and pots of old ink. Love at first sight. 92 pts
