Convalmore 36 yo 1977 / 2013 Special Release 58%
Orange chocolate, thick heavy marmalade, loads of cinnamon and cloves, dried apricot, preserved orange peel, touches of astringent and woody petitgrain. Big whisky with no signs of slowing down at 36 years. Cocoa butter, black pepper and anise candy. A very firm spirit, full of fire and Tabasco. Supple and sparkling with translucence but also stingingly acerbic with dry birch, sharp sap, sour berries and some sort of new age nettle and mustard tea. 90 pts
Convalmore 36 yo 1977 / 2013 Cadenhead 58.2%
Ok shelve the chocolate and put the thick marmalade on a full gurgling boil. Break open the spice rack and empty out the chilli seed, but also the cinnamon and anise. Fiery spices, hot sugar, camphor, bay leaf, oregano, stripped bark and hot charcoal. Again, strapping stuff. On the tongue a herby gingery hot reduction, again with orange blossom oil (CO2 not neroli) and petitgrain, tart juice of sour fruit. Citric, biting and full of complaints maybe, that this distillery should not have been closed. 90 pts
