Dailuaine 31 yo 1966 / 1997 Cadenhead 57.1%
An amazing nose. Multi hued and deep, vivacious and conversational. Complex overtones of a genuine old sherry butt, but clearly not first fill and I prefer it this way. Praline, roasted chestnut, dried black jam pots. Add cinnamon powder, liquorice, camphor shavings, galbanum, dried pine needles, aromatic bark in blackened leather pouches. Medicated oil, metal pans, dried angelica, sandalwood. Resinous in a tough brittle way. So much here, a little earthy musk even. Big boned and weighty. 92 pts

More and more I believe certain bottlers have their own preferred interpretation of what whisky should taste like. The Rare Malts saw extreme examples of distilleries bottled. This Dailuaine as well, blind I might have guessed a well behaved St. Magdalene. Stinging milky sap, sharp greens, plasticated waxworks, petrochemical tones that might span from diesel to fermenting grass. The raw kernels of apricots rubbed between the fingers. Hugely interesting whisky just sort of raw, and powerful too. 85 pts
