Clynelish 21 yo 1997 The Malt Affair and The Auld Alliance 49.9%
Everything in its place. Cold wax, honey, rubbed granite, drops of petrol, snapped twigs, one sooty smear, the juice of unripe green fruit, mastic, some fennel and a pinch of sea salt. It’s all very clean and precise, and it must be said, this taster does not find anything fishy at all. The palate provides exactly what the nose suggests, with perhaps more grass and petrol but it remains linear but lithe, and sharply defined, tending towards austerity even, leaving me to conclude this is very much my cup of Clynelish. 90 pts

Cold paraffin this time, and a truckload more gritty minerals that come across a little harsh. Mowed grass and new plastic like vinyl and glossy paper, some plain sugar syrup and smoking aromatic resins like frankincense and mastic, which would be great except it’s also a little acrid. Not the easiest Clynelish. A couple of degrees more abrasive and ascetic than the 1997 but its character is undoubtedly there. 88 pts
