Jura 30yo 1991 / 2021 Thompson Bros 46.5%
An evident maturity. The old wood sits here as a polished frame of delicious soft spices, drops of caramel on the best coconut flakes, cracking leather settees and cream polish. But old malt is just a half step behind, and it brings shades of that Jura funky oil and gasoline, and of course wet warehouse floors. Dirty seawater washes up against the nose, and hemp ropes encrusted with marine mud. Wisps of engine smoke, black resin and tar lumps, old workshop tables and oiled metal. Just a hint of snuffed wicks. Very much in line for an old Jura, but mellow integration and overall balance makes this one special – a great relief for those who know how idiosyncratic Jura tends to be. 90 pts
