Nikka Taketsuru 21 yo ‘Pure Malt’
Time for a Japanese treat. I don’t drink enough Japanese, but the quality is almost always great.
Note for the nerds – Pure Malt is the other old term for vatted malt. Today in Scotland, such a whisky would have to be called a ‘blended malt’ by law.
Nose: Very nice, complex and beautifully balanced. First up dollops of toffee-honey and jam. Held up by the ever present oak. Sweetened ginger tea.
Palette: Sweet and syrupy, but immediately followed by woody spices, something aniseed-like and drying. Quite a firm grip.
Finish: Longish, dry spice rub, even peppery, where did that come from. Great whisky, but the nose is the best part of this whisky.
