Here’s a distillery whose output goes primarily into blends – if you’ve had a Johnnie Walker, you’ve had Dailuaine.
In terms of pure production capacity, Dailuaine is big. Churning out 3+ million litres from its 3 wash, 3 spirit stills. There’s lots of this stuff going round but not as a single malt at least.
Enter the Indies:
Dailuaine 2002/2013, Gordon & Macphail, cask 7068
Nose: Full and rich. No doubt about it, it was a sherry cask, full of citrus, golden raisins and honey, bags of Christmas spice. Enough buttery oiliness. A young sherry profile, if that makes any sense. still simple, fresh and vibrant, if somewhat lacking in elegance or complexity.
Palette: Sweet, honied, a little hot. Yes, ‘oxidized’ fruit notes often found in sherry, oily, touch of pepper, and those christmas spices. Makes me think the sherry is speaking up for itself here.
Finish: Medium, malty, ever slightly herbal.
Fairly straightforward as a young sherried speysider goes, with plenty to please, though nothing to really distinguish – but that’s not its fault at this young age. An easygoing anytime drink!

We just had this and quite enjoyed it! Mind you… was sampled after Wolfburn so we were pre-calibrated to a younger dram. 😉
