Monymusk ‘Sugar Estates of Jamaica’ Rhum Agricol Moon Import 46%
Note this is a Rhum Agricole.. distilled in Jamaica… very odd because Jamaican rum is traditionally molasses based.
Light almost transparent. Sweet rice crackers, fresh and fibrous cut sugar cane, hints of nail varnish, dried white clay, some ripe green apple. Sweet-salty with pickle brine, white sugar, faint rubber gloves and traces of sandalwood and aniseed. Nothing heavy about this, and indeed rather anaemic. I wonder if this is a sort of vodka alternative marque they make.
Monymusk 12 yo Berry Brothers for La Maison du Whisky 55.4%
Heavier and bigger in the glass by magnitudes. Here the fingerprint is clearer with the recognizable gherkins in brine, dunder-y fruit funk, wet mulch, wood workshops, hot machines and machine lubricants. Black pepper, and dried sweet spice. Dried mangoes and overripe bananas. Yet it is still no beastly Jamaican, and actually rather rounded and polite. Hot sweet ginger candy and chilli on the tongue plus dunder, oil and salt. Somewhat raw even, feels somewhat immature.
