Glenugie 32 yo 1965 / 1997 SMWS 99.7 55.1%
An oily medium bodied malt that’s fairly complex with viscous oils of various sorts both vegetal and industrial, pine resin and a fair amount of tropical fruit that leans towards the citrus and sherbet fizz sort. Crayons, cut stems, cola, crunching leaves underfoot. Toasted cereals, develops into deep citrus tones and wet earth. Fruity start but somehow not a huge winner like some other Glenugies – Doesn’t take the centre stage. Still an excellent whisky though. 88 pts.

Feels like the same compass bearing was taken but here we’ve arrived in a good place. It’s much weightier with canola or thick olive oil. Solid presence, with lots of undergrowth and petrichor tones. Hints of a heathery smoke, wet stones. The overt fruity fizz is present but reduced though in turn we are rewarded with a malt of great depth. Chichona, ginseng and herbal touches. Clearly less fruit, but huge character though not an easy profile to come to terms with (and do it slowly!). 90 pts, hard to score though.
