Because who says we need to start the year with great whisky?
Dalmore 10 yo 2006 46%
Fair amount of cask influence. Jammy in a marmalade sort of way, orange rind, tamarind paste, black pepper, clove candy but also quite some blocky oak tannins. Dry matchsticks with just a touch of something sulphuric. Oily weight on the tongue and a vague monotonous sweet malt. Turning dusty dry and hot with some rye and chilli, some late interest to this monodimensional mistake. 81 pts
Tomintoul 25 yo 40% ~2014 bottling
Indeed the gentle dram. Gentle with just enough sweetness to make it ‘nice’ – echoes of turkish delights, pink marshmallows and berry compote. Light cream, generic sweet oils, a leaf or two. Overall light and reedy, and disconcertingly insubstantial on the tongue. Might be mistaken for water after a killer Laphroaig. 75 pts
Mackmyra Moments Ledin 48%
Fair amount of richness here, not quite purple hues, more golden like sultanas and panattone; and with a large dose of cream, caramel and other bourbon-y sweetness. On the tongue, sweet cinnamon sauce, cut green fruit, black pepper, generic honey, hot coconut creme. Plenty of white oak lactones, and wine driven but not quite hitting the mark. 81 pts
