Pulteney 1971 The Piper’s Preferred by Scotchconnection 55.3%
A minor German bottler. Nice! Heavily buttered poached pear frangipane. Salt, slight smoke, some engine oil, dried up book glue and pine cones. A lance of tonic and juniper bark spears the thing. A little damp warehouse and lifeless earth in a pot. Nutmeg slices make it a touch medicinal. Effervescent on the tongue. Great distillery that’s always characterful. 88 pts
Old Pulteney 26 yo 1990 / 2017 Cadenhead 175th Anniversary 52.6%
Twenty years on and we still have dollops of character, though seemingly lost some ground to wood here. Salt, engine oil, those dried glue notes, flotsam thrown back by the sea, damp wood and dirty sand. Also quite a bit more sweet oil, thick leather and burnt caramel, brimming with character if it could just get out more. 85 pts
