Clynelish 26 yo 1990 / 2016 Cadenhead 45.3%
Everyone knows 1982 and 1995 Clynelish. 1989 and 1990 were stellar too. Warm fuzzy yellow afternoon hues of hay, honey and toast, pollen and warm earth. Melting candles, snub them out and find some wispy smoky. Chardonnay, lemon tarts, warm pastry. Very more-ish. The tongue brings forth minerals from white flints, and stirred gravel in the sun. More thin smoke – no it’s really quite sooty-smoky. Warm apricots. Essential Clynelish I think. 89 pts
Highland Park 28 yo 1989 / 2018 Cadenhead 48.8%
Don’t overlook these because of the abv. Wispy resinous smoke as if from a censer, dry coal, wet earth, sea air. Lots of muddy gravel beneath seaworn boots. Sprigs of marjoram and spearmint. Thin fruity aromatics from green berries, cut honeydews and lemon pith. Scraped bark, dried Japanese seaweed. A lot to see here. Tends to saltiness towards the finish. A brittle-waxy profile more light and high toned than brassy and massive. Great Highland Park, all about the subtlety. 90 pts
