Springbank 21 yo 1996 / 2018 ‘peated type’ Whisky Agency 50.9%
Why isn’t this Longrow then? Because Longrow is double distilled and this was made with the 2 plus distillation regime unique to Springbank. An engine oil and dank black earth character that’s so Springbank. Salt, earth, white smoke and dank warehouse in spades. Lots of spilt engine oil and lubricants. A fire made from branches on sandy soil. Lightly dirty in turns as well: charred cardamom pods, burnt orange rinds, soot stains, white mushrooms and wet leather. Great Springbank. 90 pts
Springbank 23 yo 1994 / 2017 Nectar of the Daily Drams 50.6%
It is the very essence of the 1996 sharped into a razor. Peated malt dust, hot white ash, truffle oil, geosmin, grapefruit pith, rock salt and smoky white flints. That’s it, no fat, no abundance, just a touch of Springbank earthiness. The Subtle Knife if it was imagined by a Scot who rather preferred pubs over alternate worlds and the cyclical meaning of Life. Though I won’t say its extraordinarily peaty either. 90 pts
