Port Ellen 27 yo 1978 / 2006 Platinum Douglas Laing 55.3%
A softer sort of peat where the power has turned to elegance. Unburnt tobacco, dried bark, resins, gentian – curious how old peat often develops gentian – and gummed up branches. Smoky caramel. It’s a warm and gentle but fuzzy, once-dirty smoke, salt baked meat, with a soft gamey side. Quite salty on the tongue though, with sharp sap, mastic, oily leather and brine. One can feel the peat receding in this whisky. 88 pts
Port Ellen 1979 / 2004 Acredyke 60%
Powerful stuff. Dry crumbly peat, oily engines and hot exhaust. Very strident. Thick suede leather, freshly pulled roots and wet earth, smoked herring and sea salt. Machines at work and hot metal. Big, direct, sharp and powerful. 91 pts
