Craigellachie 1991 / 2010 Connoisseurs Choice Gordon & Macphail 43%
A distillery which I am late to. Wow this is excellent for a regular old Connoisseurs Choice. Full of meditative autumnal notes like gentle honey, yellow fruit, dried leaves and soft waxes. This wonderful profile is not uncommon but one where Clynelish is something of a torchbearer. White wine, light tobacco and chamomile tea. Clean and and creamy. Gently drying with what is almost wisp of smoke. 88 pts

‘Cabinet of curiosities’ is very apt. Sachets of old potpourri, the sort with more dried leaves and berries than flowers. One drop of eucalyptus-camphor oil. Pine air freshener soaked into old teak wood. Bits of game. Suggestions of the softest bruised pear. On the tongue this lurches sideways to become butter paired with hot petrol and scorched minerals. Burnt plastic, a little acrid really, then salty like anchovies in brine. This whisky has character like a Bugatti has power, what it needs is some self-control, but come on, 12 years old! 89 but possible 90 pts
