Ben Nevis 42 yo 1973 / 2015 Signatory for 67 Pall Mall 43%
A savoury sort of Ben Nevis, with culinary herbs in a vegetable broth, next to old saucepans and fry oil. And a sweet fruity plum jam side as well. I can’t get away from something in this mix of vegetal and spice that reminds me of rhum agricole. Also, the maturation is impeccable, here with the restrained oak contributing lovely little tinned fruit notes, dry leather strips, maybe a drop of medicated oil, some mint tea, polished wood and stemmy grappa. 88 pts
Ben Nevis 44 yo 1970 / 2015 Finest Whisky #6 44.4%
This one is a wall of thick oily notes reminiscent of the bottom of a pot of burnt soup with remnants of seared bouquet garni and meat bits. Old fruit cordial that’s gone a little musty and ground nut frangipane. Thick syrupy poached fruit, but also metal polish and old oiled leather. Heavy cream and a bunch of oak tannins. A mix of acrid and bitter juxtaposed with sweet and oily. This is rather atypical to me, though hugely interesting and offering a take on whisky seldom chanced upon. Challenging to me but certainly a potential favourite of another. 85 pts Anyway it’s just cool the label has Uwe taking Death to the grave.
