Glen Lochy 14 yo The Whisky Shop 50% ~ Burn Stewart Distillers
An unusual one for The Whisky Shop some time ago. Cut stems in water and dry sphagnum moss (they come wrapped like yellow bricks), so rather dried and stem-my. Some savoury herb like what one might reach for for a stew. Dusty plaster walls, white clay and dry brown wrapping paper. Eventually smoothed over by cream and sweet wood. Nice warm heat on the tongue, ginger and cracked pepper with just a dry savoury bite to it that brings to mind broth. Charming though not the best but who cares this is a lost olfactory artefact. 86 pts
Glenlochy 32 yo 1980 / 2012 Signatory #1759 60.1%
Similarities and differences. This one has a biting sappy edge and its clear the sherry butt never tamed the Glenlochy. Also as potent as they come. Very dense and introspective without water, which is necessary here. When it finally speaks one finds this curious sweet-savoury herbal quality again, this time more parsley and sage-like, uncooked nuts, and apricot kernels squashed between the fingers. Broken branches and oozing sap again. And more fibreboards and plaster walls. Not an easy whisky for sure. Dusty lightbulbs getting hot. Very powerful with huge grip on the tongue. Well it’s a hard and austere one. A cantankerous Single Malt, pity its loss. 87 pts
