Bowmore 11 yo 2001 / 2013 Berry Bros 20197 46%
Bowmore was in form those years. And that plays out again here. A sharp saline coastal character, ground up shells, hot sand, white flints, spicy ginger beer, cut leaves, hot clay and menthol with a rather large dose of fresh ash. Simple and on point, sometimes that all you need. Echoes of fruit on the nose promises much. 87 pts

Oh, shakier ground. Black tea, dry leather, and sugar burnt to a crisp. Plenty of wood chips and tannins, pine planks and terpenes. Some richness rises to meet the challenge -cooked orange rind, a thin veneer of purple berry skins, but no it falls flat. Hot menthol, salty smoky sea air and ash. Not a stellar example. The oak in particular feels hastily treated and raw. The sea and hot furnaces awaken on the tongue, but the battle’s lost. 83 pts
