Port Charlotte 12 yo 2004 Highland Laird 57.3%
Seawater and a clean almost crispy peat that evokes uprooted shrubs laid out in the sun, roots chopped up and ground into the dusty black soil. Touches of gentian, dried lemon, and rock salt. Very Islay? Eucalyptus and a dash of bitters. A smoked ham on the tongue, salty and warm. So clean, so simple and so good. 88 pts

An older Octomore. Not sure why it sat on my shelf this long. Pure heavy peat, high octane stuff obviously, but a clean kind of peat, without dirtiness, muddiness or big medicinal elements. Clean and snappy, oily myrtle and eucalyptus. Rather curiously a smoked duck aspect emerges but the brine and fresh seaweed keeps it crisp That said this is really all peat. 86 pts

Again, the peat is through the roof. Smoked oat flakes, some smoked ham, bit of wood pencils which is odd for a young whisky, and searing hot metal. Expectedly powerful and this time a touch raw but really just powerful Bruichladdich that’s all about the peat and not much else, which is also my gripe here. 85 pts
