Yes, a barrage: Honey, chalk powder, struck gunpowder and wispy white smoke. Molten wax, lime zest, and quite a massive pile of yellow fruit. One of the mineral but honeyed ones. Tiny hints of gentian, clean earth and white mushrooms. Very honeyed on the tongue, with a real sour tinned fruit note and bristling texture to die for. 90 pts

Ben Nevis’ sulphurous quality can be a bit tricky, and here’s why. Dirty flints and quasi-sulphur step to the fore. Soot crusted pots, and the fuzzy effervescence of struck matches. Little grains of burnt this and thats. Soil clogged roots of discarded vegetables in the bin if you leave it till tomorrow. Despite this the chalk, the honey, zest and yellow stonefruit remain just a step behind – and are louder on the tongue but could do with a lot more airtime. 87 pts

Yeast, burnt hair, muddy flints, and then fatty with margarine, sunflower oil and shortcrust. Less honeyed but more of an oily whisky than the previous two. Celebrate the differences. On the palate it’s fairly nondescript, being mostly sweet oils, dough and that Ben Nevis fuzzy almost-sulphur not-sulphur that keeps the texture lively. 85 pts
