Lagavulin 12yo Special Release 2019 56.5% vs Pulteney 12yo 2008 / 2020 Nectar 57.5%

In memory of those who went before their time.

Pulteney 12yo 2008 / 2020 Nectar 57.5%

I have questions on where the production of this unspeakably underrated malt goes, seeing as so little of it ends up with independents and the officials aren’t exactly found everywhere either. Anyone who likes a clean Springbank will like this. Warm butter, igniting gas, a clean and fresh cocktail of petrol and soda, sans smoke or soot. It’s really quite zippy with zingy sweet lemon and clove tea, salt air fish pie and a good quantity of musky fruit not unlike old Bruichladdich. 88 pts

Lagavulin 12yo Special Release 2019 56.5%

Aside from the lamentable change in livery, this ought to be rather classic. Kudos to Diageo for consistency, for this unassailable giant maintains its nobility. So grizzled and growling, you can feel it. Peat bonfires over which piles of bitterly aromatic herbs and roots have been strewn and smoked ham washed down with lapsang souchong. Ash, more ash and black oily smoke over muddy seawater. Everything where you expect it to be. Used nets, ripening seaweed, shellfish and the muddy bottom of rock pools, while lying on a hot beach sand basking in the heat. A bottle to always have some version of open. 90 pts
