Glen Ord 40 yo 1965 Royal Mile Whiskies 40.1%
The kind of magic one looks for in these old ones. Old lumps of beeswax, dusty pollen, a bit of amaretto and flaking lacquer. Dusty dry but resinous with aged frankincense and mastic, old copper coins and lubricant oils at the bottom of desiccated cedar boxes. Dried strips of green mango, a thin hibiscus tea and little mint jujubes, all while reclining on the most worn out leather settee you can imagine. Quite beautiful all around, pity about the strength, still if you needed a killer way to open the evening, this is the one to go for. 89 pts
Glenury Royal 24 yo 1973 / 1997 Signatory #6851 53.7%
This one leans towards the dirty phenolics- garages and oily rags, sooty tables, rusty metal tools, dry loam, but also black pepper and plenty of bay leaf. The herbaceous aspects are gentle medicated, with cardamom and some leathery herbals that suggests saffron. Crystalized peel and dried luo han guo. On the tongue it reveals an earthiness with a side of gamey cured meat and old hay. Just before the finish a hidden muskiness appears, it is not the most welcome. Not the easiest of profiles for sure. 88 pts
