Teaninich 12 yo 2007 / 2019 Single Malts of Scotland #301262 57.5%
Well its young and hot. 12 years is just way too little for Teaninich. And too little for this sherry butt too, you can feel a meagre lashing of sherry sweetness starting to creep in, but clearly neither the spirit or the sherry are mature here. Still, its a clean, sort of malty sweet make, just throwing off the typical off-notes of youth. A fair herbaceous side is evident, next to the lemon and lime zests, but it’s just not ready to be taken seriously. 83 pts
Secret Orkney 15 yo 2005 / 2021 Cooper’s Choice #121 56%
A lot more going on here. Dirty seawater, the beginnings of baked fruit, flinty sand and sea mud; But also a lot of young malt with feinty facets still evident. Modern Highland Park does seem to need time. On the tongue it’s all buffeting white smoke, and hot with grated ginger, mint and chilli. Baked fish pie. Definitely character-driven, which is what makes Highland Park great, just needs time. 85 pts
