Clynelish 26 yo 1993 / 2020 Carn Mor #11215 52.7%
Absolutely my sort of whisky. Its sharp as a blade, forged of blazing minerals, lime rind and steel, quenched in wintergreen and eucalyptus oil, and coated in a cold hard wax. There is in truth a vanillic aspect to this one as well, like vanilla pods in white sugar that came in creamy white oak, but it plays third fiddle to the exactingly precise minerals and wax, which do also linger on, austere and persistent, to a somewhat herbaceously bitter finish. O Clynelish, My Clynelish. 91 pts
Bowmore 17 yo 2004 /2021 SMWS 3.327 ‘Siren’s Song’ 57.1%
A siren song it is. Fruit is back on the menu! Don’t get too excited though, there’s not really that much of it. It’s firstly about saline and plenty of white petrochemical smoke. But there’s plenty of coal and coconut fibre set afire, helped along with generous gallons of lighter fluid, hot stones and heated mollusc shells, then finally shades of juicy tropical fruit start to peek out, but they’re there. It also feels like they started to turn up the peating levels this side of 2000. Seasoaked sweaters, menthol cigarettes and a growing grapefruit rind and arugula bitterness. 89 pts
