Dornoch 5 yo 2017 / 2023 #46 ‘Jasper Broers’ 57.9%
This is of course from the small first distillery and not the larger being planned. If you believe the proof of the pudding is in its eating then rest assured Phil and Simon are doing great work. While this is a young whisky matured in a small cask, it is impressively faultless and feintless. Leather, creme caramel, sweet oak and vanilla pods are equally matched by an assertive spirit with a dry and dusty herbaceaous tones that leans slightly medicinal. Some barley sugar and dried guava hide far in the background. In ways it reminds me of a rye blend. Well on its way to greatness. 87 pts
Shizuoka ‘private cask’ 2017 / 2022 #2017-108 61%
Private cask for something I can’t read. This one is clearly a heavy sort of whisky and its really exciting to realize the distant kinship to Karuizawa here. That said the youth is apparent, but masked by active bourbon wood. Again leather cream, caramel, coconut, sweet vanilla custard and the typical oakiness abounds, yet a slight growl is unmistakable under the sweetness. The very palest ghost of feints stalk the palate. Vinous grappa notes, cleaned roots like ginseng and angelica, dried peel and chichona lay a fat aromatic weight on the tongue despite the bourbon. I haven’t tried many Shizoukas but the texture and body in this is something to look forward to with anticipation. 85 pts
