Glen Garioch 32 yo 1988 / 2021 Whisky Mew ‘Masked Rider’ #1598 47.6%
Dry sandy loam and crushed fern, violet leaf and coumarin. Aromatic-earthy. The old oak wakes with plenty of coconut flakes, caramel drizzle and fine leather, all rather low key for a bourbon cask of this age. Touches of camphor, a drop of petrol and a whole nutmeg. I find a characteristic sort of acerbic mineral bite that’s dry but lifting sort of akin to charcoal and chlorine that’s so Glen Garioch. Also eucalyptus and crushed parsley. Age and oak has well rounded down some of the extreme edges of this distillate is capable of. Good whisky, if not the easiest to approach. 88 pts
