Longmorn 1975/2011 Malts of Scotland, 46.4% Bourbon Hogshead 3977, 122 bottles
Nose: Luxuriant but hot. Juicy syrupy red berries, fruits of the forest style, that reminds me a bit of Irish pot still character! Lacquered cedarwood box filled with rose petals. Very voluptuous but still classy. So fresh despite its age (36 years – its a MILF) Mint cake and something ‘green’. Ah it hides a bit of camphor too… and wet cloth? Very nice nose.
Palette: Still fresh and lively, imagine that! Sweetish tart, licorice allsorts and thick green tea, then fruity juice! Sliced yellow stone fruits. Becomes smoother, the heat toning down to a nice tannic hold. Quite mouth watering really. Turns imperceptibly herbier and drier until the finish is upon you.
Finish: Long and complex, fruity on the tip of the tongue, and a bit of thyme? Such a tease.
It’s like this one never left its teens… 36 years and still so lovely! Lush fruity yet complex Longmorn, in what must be a rather lazy cask, excellent!
The distillery itself? Not as pretty as it’s malt I’m afraid:
But don’t be fooled, this is not a diminutive distillery. It has 8 stills that were direct fired by coal till 1994.
Today they are steam heated, though whether by steam pipes or steam cylinders I cannot seem to get a definite word on. But it makes 3.5 million L a year and that mostly goes into Chivas’ blends.
