Siete Misterios Mezcal Espadin 48%
Espadin is a Agave varietal that is commonly used for Mezcal, most bottlers or distillers would have an Espadin offering in their line up.
Nose: As Mezcals go, this one strikes me as being less heavy-herbaceous, and also less overtly smoky, but more elegant with a profile that leans towards yeast, and a cleaner fresher sort of herbaceous. Warm dough, hay, yellow flowers, and hamster litter (sorry). Also quite mineral, with chalk and ground limestone. Dried branches.
Palate: Salty-sour assam and awash with lots of smokey herbals. Warm dough notes appear again, thin honey. Something floral and it gets salty again.
Finish: Rather long, salty smokey herbaceaous with hints of florals.
Siete Misterios Mezcal Doba-Yej 2013 45.5%
Doba-Yej is… Espadin in the Zapotec language. Chosen to differentiate this particular Espadin from the one above.
Nose: Back into heavier territories here, with deep buzzy herbals. This one has a real funk, like dirty carpet that’s been washed and you can smell both the clean and funky if that makes sense. Also some cut green fruit like green apple. And then salinity and smoke. Looking to be a very good one.
Palate: Actually quite a sophisticated entry. Nuanced with a lot of smoke and many vegetal hues, plus funk. Drying or cutting even with minerals and some acidity. Does finish rather quickly.
Finish: On the short side, quite dry, dusty, salt and smoke.
