I like Glen Garioch a lot. It’s got an interesting history, and great bottles both old and new. These 90s bottles in particular display a very mineral and cutting style that is so individual and does so well in refill wood, it almost occupies a whole niche itself.
Glen Garioch 23 yo 1990 Nectar of the Daily Drams 49.7%
Nose: Very much expected – Flinty minerals, cut grass, and white clay. Lots of wet but clean earthy scents of petrichor and wet carbon filters, and something like little tart green berries. Chalk and Lime leaf. A lean sharp nose that falls into a very precise camp.
Palate: Seems bigger with sweet earth, lots of bourbon wood effect: leather cream, burnt toffee, but also charred wood. Also lots of chalky minerals, charcoal and warm lime zest. Again a sweet but thin and cutting profile.
Finish: Long, with toffee charcoal, minerals, earth, zest, fruit acid.
Glen Garioch 24 yo 1990 Signatory #2761 48.8%
Nose: Much bigger and much more presence. The wood was much more active, but the spirit’s also full of oil paste and acrylic paint. Some light medicinal touches, and green mentholatum. Hints of smoke even, then comes the familiar wet charcoal flints and chalk. Plenty of petrichor. Beguiling.
Palate: Lots of oak tannins and the proof of an active bourbon cask in here. Licks of smoke, medicinal-sweet like camphor and cream. Sooty oils. Mountains of hot sand and burning flints. Charcoal and dried bark.
Finish: Mediumish.. fizzles somewhat, but the hot flints and smoke remain.
